Video-game design start-up team looking for members to learn the ways together (no/little experience needed)

We are a small team of gaming enthusiasts looking for additional members as we embark into the world of video-game design. This group will be specifically working together in learning the practicable abilities required to design video-games. We are young adult, part-time college students, and take game design very seriously, but are also easy to get along with, and are super easy-going individuals.

Our goals:

• Learn the different elements of video-game design, we will be starting with the coding side of things.
• Work together as a study group to help each-other understand and to maintain motivation.
• Gain valuable networking connections along the way with-in the field.
• Once we understand enough code, we will likely start with designing games for mobile platforms (iOS, others) and work our way up.
• We strive to design games of quality only seen a few times before by other design teams.

We live in the East and South regions of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA. Potential participants do not need to live anywhere near us however, as we use this thing called the Internet to communicate.

We’re extremely dedicated to our goal, and firmly believe that if we help each other out, we can achieve what a few game designers have only pulled off a hand-full of times before.

Again, we don’t care where you live, and there is no age requirement, so long as you have enough time, dedication, discipline, patience, and most importantly, passion for video-games.

Why we decided to do this:

For as far back as we can remember, we’ve been avid gamers, and been one step ahead of everyone else. In the more recent ages however, we have been continually let down by sub-par games by design teams, and by immature, impatient gaming communities. As we look back on our past success and experience, we know that that surely can’t be the best of times. But we don’t want to trust a hope. We’re not simply going to hope for a great game to be released. We want to bring our passion for games directly into the design side of things, to share what we enjoy doing the most.

If game design is something you’ve always wanted to do, but were never sure how to get started, or how to go about doing any of it, or if you’re someone with some experience already and interested in gaining valuable team members, you’ve come to the right place.

This is not a free ride, don’t expect to be sitting back and taught everything. Each member has to be pro-active in learning what needs to be known, and self-motivated to ensure it gets done.

Daniel Gorgen has extensive experience in adventure/puzzle titles, growing up playing such titles as “Myst,” and it’s sequel “Riven.” He developed his fascination with intricate details and story/character depth through these games, and specializes in computer-games. Daniel later became interested in graphic design for a time before discovering the MMORPG genre. There he became extensively involved in the early community of the little known MMO– “Helbreath.” After four years he was pleasantly surprised with an MMO of unmatched rivalry, the original “World of Warcraft.” Daniel was in awe of the incredibly unique art style and fluid controls, balanced with challenging game mechanics. He was later sadly let down by the release of the first expansion, where he believed the essence of the original title and style had been lost. Future expansions moved the focus away from what he believed was a truly unique gaming experience, and more towards a mainstream, “please the masses” style. Along the way, other titles he found the most interesting and worth paying attention to were: “Chrono Trigger,” “The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind,” “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion,” “Diablo II,” “Age of Empires II,” “Half-Life,” “Counter-Strike,” “Team Fortress Classic,” “Half-Life 2,” “Garry’s Mod,” “Unreal Tournament,” “Freelancer,” “Dragon Age: Origins,” “Amnesia: The Dark Descent,” and “Minecraft.” Daniel was always interested in game design, but was never sure how to start off, and would usually think that great games would continue to come out to hold his interest. He went to college to study social sciences, having always been interested with the subject, but found he couldn’t be creative enough with it. With the rapid increase of interest in video-gaming, and the highly lacking quality of titles being released, Daniel finally made the decision to go ahead with his childhood-dream of becoming a game designer.

Daniel Tran grew up playing plat-formers and fighting titles, advancing to RPGs at a later age. Easy access to a wide variety of games meant Daniel Tran had a unique opportunity to develop his gaming skills, and quickly found that most games could hardly challenge him. For a time he thrived on the newly found genre of strategy-RPGs, through which he discovered some of his favorite games, namely “Final Fantasy Tactics,” and “Disgaea.” Finally moving onto computer games, Daniel Tran started his online gaming career with “Counter-Strike,” where he brought his ever-advancing abilities and unique play-style to the extensively competitive online-gaming community. After becoming somewhat of a legend within the Counter-Strike community, Daniel Tran eventually moved on to “Heroes of Newerth,” where he continues to play casually today. Along the way, other titles Daniel Tran found the most worthy of his time and interest were: “Chrono-Trigger,” “Legend of Legaia,” “Golden Sun,” “Mega Man X – X8,” “Monster Rancher,” “Super Mario RPG,” and “Super Smash Brothers Melee.” Through out Daniel Tran’s years of experience and expertise, he has been continually let down by less than enjoyable titles, and by rushed developers, producing huge let-down games. It is his hope that his contribution to the design side of the video-game field will help influence others for the better, in addition to bringing truly brilliant game-play back to modern games.
